I wasn’t the only person to find Adrie Santos’s sex writer site down for the count over the weekend. I was bummed that the page is down–what happened, Adrie? Did your domain expire on you?
That got me thinking. What happens if you own a sexy domain name that some other company would kill to have and you let it lapse by accident? GoDaddy.com has a service where you can pay to monitor domains and try to buy them when they expire if they aren’t renewed by the owner.
Some services like GoDaddy now let you auto-renew, but if you don’t have that going for you, your sexy domain name could get sniped out from under you if you miss your renewal deadline. Not cool, but a fact of life on the web.
I have auto-renew set up on my site now to keep this from happening, but you can also protect your site by buying the name for long times–not just a year or two. It makes sense to get one for 5 or even ten years if you’re planning on making the site a part of your writing business.
Sex writers, protect your websites and your brand! Don’t let a little lapse in memory screw you over.
